Córdoba is an ancient city located in Andalucia, located next to the Guadalquivir river in the foothills of the Sierra Morena mountain range. The city has a long history originating from pre-Roman times and has seen many occupants along its history. It has a beautiful old town which was named as protected as "Patrimony of Humanity" by UNESCO in 1984.
During the Roman era it was the capital of the Betica region, and was renowned as a city with many splendors, almost the equal of Rome itself. It was latterly occupied during the Moorish invasion when it was considered an independent region, and was latterly taken by the Visigods then the Catholic Kings.
The town centre has been specifically recognised and protected by UNESCO, partly due to the magnificent Moorish construction of the "Mezquita de Cordoba" which is an ancient mosque built in the very centre of the town of magnificent splendor and in an excellent state of preservation. This monument was completed in the 10th Century and was instantly recognised as one of the most beautiful mosques in the world, with its colourful, sweeping curves and graceful arches.
The centre of the town is still adorned with beautiful white washed Andalucian streets, gardens and parks, with impressive buildings and imposing palaces, most of which have a legacy reaching back to the original Muslim heritage of the city.
Due to its rural location, in the very heartland of provincial Andalucia, most foreign property owners tend to purchase country properties, either in the outskirts of Cordoba in satellite towns, or by taking over a farm house (finca or cortijo) which is perhaps in need of some refurbishment. Property for sale in Cordoba centre tends to be first home residential-style apartments or older "Casas del Pueblo" (townhouses). Such townhouses for sale in Cordoba do have a great authenticity and the advantage of being located in a busy city, but have the downside of not being generally very relaxing places to live, more expensive than properties on the outskirts of Cordoba, and most of all, HOT - especially in the absence of air-conditioning in older properties. Please do remember that Cordoba is in one of the hottest areas of Spain!
