Benalmadena is a very popular area for tourists, both from Spain and international visitors. Located just 20 minutes from the airport, it is very convenient for quick and easy access as there is no necessity for a long drive from the airport and the public transport links are very good. There are great amenities in the area, such as beaches, golf courses, shops, restaurants, bars and theme parks for younger guests. The property for sale in Benalmadena varies from new build apartments to traditional townhouses and villas.

Benalmadena is split into three main areas, Benalmadena Costa (a primarily touristy beach area), the market town of Arroyo de la Miel and the breathtakingly beautiful village of Benalmadena Pueblo. In the pueblo you can take in the typical winding streets, quaint shops & tapas bars whereas the Costa is better for a day by the beach or activities, and Arroyo de la Miel is the area to go for a day's shopping. The coastal area also benefits from the stunning port (Puerto Marina - voted the best in Europe) and also has restaurants and bars in abundance. The Tivoli World theme park is located in Arroyo de la Miel, as is the 18 hole Torrequebrada Golf course & the Sea Life Centre.

There is also a unique Buddist Temple in Benalmadena Pueblo, which is one of the only kinds in Europe and the biggest outside of Tibet. There is a pretty church in the Old Town which is perched on a hill, overlooking the sea and has beautiful gardens just below it. Other interesting features are the Colomares Castle which was build by an eccentric Englishman (using manual labour), this castle contains rare birds and snakes. The old town centre (or Casco Antiguo) comprises of winding, narrow streets which are whitewashed in typical Andalucian style. There is plenty to explore and on the way you´ll find little tapas bars and squares that are beautifully decorated. There are frequently religious festivals in the area where the locals parade in the streets carrying religious statues and bands play music. This is most common during the August Feria fiesta, Easter and Christmas time.

Property for sale in Benalmadena Pueblo often benefits from outstanding views over the Mediterranean sea, due to its elevated position in the foothills of the mountains. The properties for sale in the old town vary from apartments to villas and there are also spacious traditional Andalucian townhouses to buy.

If you are interested in buying a Spanish golf property, there are many courses in the area. These include Benalmadena Golf, which is a Par 3, 9 hole municipal course with challenging water shots. There is an 18 hole more challenging course near to Arroyo de la Miel which is called Torrequebrada Golf and is considered one of the better courses on the Costa del Sol.

Other attractions in the vicinity include Tivoli World, which is an Amusement Park located between the Pueblo and Benalmadena Costa. There are many varied rides for children and adults and also frequent shows at the park. On Sundays before 1pm it is only €1 to enter as there is a market on inside the actual park from around 9am. There is also a large market in the Tivoli car park which is on each Friday from 8am – 2pm and this is the main market in the area.

Selwo Marina in Benalmadena Costa is located alongside Paloma Park and is an outdoor animal park based mainly around sea life. The park holds dolphins, sea lions, snakes, exotic birds and even an icy habitat for penguins.

Parque de la Paloma, otherwise know as Paloma Park, is a real hidden gem that extends from the coast to Arroyo de la Miel. It is beautifully landscaped with exotic plants and contains animals such as ducks, birds, rabbits, chickens and even peacocks and there are also great play areas for children. Entry is completely free. Wednesday mornings also hold a market from around 8am – 2pm.

Furthermore, a Cable Car (Teleférico) travels to the top of the mountain behind Benalmadena and enjoys stunning views of the entire coast. There is also a sanctuary at the top for birds of prey and there is an impressive show several times per day.

There are literally dozens of different beaches in Benalmadena, all of which are carefully maintained for tourists. The quieter ones are on the road that passes out of the Pueblo past the Colomares castle. For the more adventurous there are busier beaches nearer to the Marina, where watersports are available.

Puerto Marina is perhaps the most famous landmark in the area, which is the main port in Benalmadena and is undoubtedly stunning by day or night. It is an excellent place to go to eat, drink, take a boat trip, go fishing, ride on jetski´s and much more. The Sea Life Centre is also located in the Puerto Marina port. The centre houses more than 5,000 different creatures from the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans and even creatures normally found in the Red Sea and even diverse and amazing species from the Amazon.

Property for sale in Arroyo de la Miel (the market town) is less aimed at holiday makers and more for full time residents. However, the property for sale in Benalmadena Costa is aimed at both full time residents and those looking for a holiday home. Most apartments have swimming pools and there are also villas for sale in Benalmadena Costa which have well sized plots and are realistically priced.

Overall, the downside to Benalmadena could be that as parts of it are very built up to service mass tourism, that this is not to everyone's taste. Furthermore, in the high season it does get extremely busy with tourists, like many areas of the Spanish costas. However, there are a massive range of amenities, particularly for families, and the locals are used to dealing with foreign visitors and residents, so it can be easier to get along without fluent Spanish than in other areas of Spain. Also, if the built up areas are not for you, there is also the option of areas in Arroyo de la Miel and Benalmadena Pueblo which are as pretty and authentic as anywhere in Andalucia.
