The Mar Menor is located in the south east of Spain, in the region of Murcia. It literally means “Minor Sea” in Spanish, as it is a small lagoon-like sea which is separated from the Mediterranean by a 300m wide & 21km long strip of land called La Manga, which means “the sleeve” in English. The Mar Menor has been used as for fishing since the time of the Romans and Phoenicians and ship wrecks of great archaeological significance have been discovered on the sea bed.

The main town on the Mar Menor is called Los Alcazares, which was first populated during the Moorish occupation of Spain, and the name literally means “palace” in Arabic. It was latterly occupied by Christians and used as a fishing port due to its geographical position close to two seas. Later on it became used by early tourists who used to come to bathe in the lagoon in August.

Nowadays, the Mar Menor is still used due to its properties as a place to relax and look after one's health also. Due to the high salt content of the water, it is thought that it has great properties for healing skin problems, alleviating breathing issues and the warm, temperate climate is better for elderly people than the more harsh weather in northern Europe. Furthermore, as it is sheltered from any stormy waters in the Mediterranean by La Manga, the water is suitable for people of all ages.

La Manga was historically owned by the Spanish state, but was sold off in 1863 to private investors. This eventually led to the development of the land.
